GAP 2 Gap 2008 Recap

The 2008 Junior Gap2Gap event received tremendous positive response, as most participants enjoyed the friendly competition and the superb award ceremony with Boomer and ceremony host K.L. Wombacher from the Bears. The Gap West Broadcasting panel judged the juniors’ sportswear contest, which ranged from a variety of fun styles and colors, and also gave the competitors an exciting edge to the race.
In excellent weather, Dr. Hamilton Licht announced each adult runner along with some of their history with the event as they crossed the finish line; this is an enormous enhancement for the runners for this event. Many participants commented on the great time they had, along with their appreciation for the search and rescue folks who were challenged with a higher than normal river level.  One team from Bend, Oregon said, “Your search and rescue group got me out of a tough jam out in the water, I thought I was going to have to let my boat go, but they got us out of the problem and away we went”.  We were excited to have four teams of a new age group (late teens to early twenties) participate in the adult race.
In comparing last year’s event, both the junior and adult teams have increased in numbers.  Invite your friends and families to participate, volunteer or Sponsor the 25th Anniversary of The Yakima Greenway Gap2Gap relay race in 2009.  This race exemplifies the many outdoor recreation qualities of the Yakima Valley.  The adult race has two categories, Elite and Sport.  The five legs of the Elite Adult category are: Field run, mountain bike, kayak/canoe, road bike, and 10K run. The Sport Adult Gap2Gap features an in-line skate leg in place of the water leg, shorter mountain bike leg, and a 5K run. The race takes place on and around the Yakima Greenway, along the scenic Yakima and Naches Rivers.
You need to get involved to make the 25th anniversary Gap to Gap a major success by encouraging others to participate or volunteer for the event. If you would like more information on sponsorship levels or becoming a participant, please call Jeff Brantner at 453-8280.
